Clean Up
Keep It Clean!

10 Ways to Help Keep Herrington Lake Clean
-
Pick up trash around the lake. Organize road or neighborhood cleanups.
-
Maintain your septic system, including tank pump-outs every 3 to 5 years.
-
Protect your shoreline with trees, shrubs and other vegetation.
-
Avoid new construction at or near the lakeshore to reduce erosion to lake.
-
Create contoured or curving pathways to the lake (rather than straight, downhill pathways). This reduces storm water runoff and erosion.
-
Minimize boat wakes and slow down near shore.
-
Clear fallen trees (not living trees!) from the banks to prevent them from washing into the lake.
-
Don’t flush sewage from boats into the lake. Use holding tanks and have them pumped out.
-
Minimize livestock access to the lake. Also, clean up after your pets. Livestock manure and pet waste can run off into the lake, adding to nutrient and fecal contamination.
-
Report spills or trash dumping to local or state authorities.
If you notice a severe hazard in the water, you should text, email or call ASAP!
Clean-Up Request Form
The purpose of HLCL is to clean the lake of man-made debris and trash!
If you are a homeowner on the lake, you can hire us to assist in cleaning your bank. Our crew cuts and stacks wood and removal of dead docks. Homeowners will need to burn any stacked wood on their property! This will help keep costs down. This allows our crew to assist more members. Our crew will not clear vegetation, including cutting down any trees that are standing, or assisting with the removal of any trees that have fallen above the high-water elevation (760').
We cannot touch an old dock that has broken loose unless the owner surrenders the dock to HLCL! You can email Beth Boursaw at HLCLcleanup@gmail.com.
Whether you are a member or not, you can also hire us. We require more than one request in an area to help with cost. Our crew is an independent contractor paid by your donations. Our service areas are from Bryant’s Camp to the Dix Dam and everything between.
Thank You to our cleanup crew!
Our cleanup crew CANNOT respond to direct requests for assistance.
HLCL has 4 dumpsters: 2 at Pandora and 1 at Kamp Kennedy, and 1 at Cunningham's Mid-lake for the use of disposing of man-made debris and trash from the lake. These dumpsters are for disposal of any man-made debris, loose open foam, and trash.
Please Do Not Litter!

-

-
Can I use my boat, or do I meet somewhere to ride with others? You can use your boat by being proactive every time you go out. If you have a pontoon boat, it is easy to get to places on the bank that may need man-made debris or trash picked up. There is some nice driftwood out there! If you know someone with a boat, organize a ride to help with cleanup efforts!
-
Are there different neighborhood involvements? We try to encourage neighborhood cleanup. Different neighborhoods have different types of banks. If your neighborhood has a walk-able bank, organize a neighborhood cleanup. Get your local HOA involved. HLCL will be happy to help pick up any man-made debris or trash collected! For more information, please contact hlclcleanup@gmail.com.
-
Is the clean up at a certain time?We encourage cleanup activities year-round! One year we had March Madness and encouraged different portions of the lake to hold clean-ups on different weekends. There is too much March Madness in Kentucky in March so that wasn't that effective. We now have an annual clean up in June. Would you like to host a community cleanup in your area on that day? Should we try something like that in April next year? Contact us for pickup for any man-made debris or trash at hlclcleanup@gmail.com from the Annual Community Cleanup Day.
-
If I cannot help, can I donate food, drinks, or money for cleanup operation?HLCL will be glad to accept support for any event. If you would like to donate money, goods or services that are helpful to our efforts to our fundraising events that would be great! Sponsor a hole or play on a team at our golf scramble in September! We have an organized Annual Community Cleanup Day. You can supply or serve coffee, water or donuts to any of the workers.
-
Are the clean up efforts centralized, or are there multiple locations that I can go help?Did you know that there are 325 miles of shoreline on Herrington Lake? Neighborhood cleanups can be anywhere. We need people to help! Organize a neighborhood cleanup day!
-
Where can I find the cleanup dates? If you organize a neighborhood cleanup, we will be glad to post your information on our Facebook page. Contact us at hlclcleanup@gmail.com! Annual Community Cleanup Day
