We Need You

After nine years of sustained clean-up efforts you might think it is time for HLCL to declare victory and fade away into the sunset. Herrington Lake does not remain clean all by itself. Our contracted clean-up crews worked more than 590 man-days in 2007, removing 20 large commercial dumpster loads of man-made debris and more than 903 tons of dead wood from the lake and shoreline. In 2008 we worked more that 480 man-days, removing approximately 657 cubic yards of man-made debris and another 1000 tons of wood from the lake and shoreline.  In 2009 we worked 430 man-days and had at least another 100 man days donated by Garrard County.  That is a total of 530 man-days!

None of these results can be sustained for long unless the individuals and organizations that enjoy the benefits of a clean and safe lake join in by offering their time, talents, and money. We need your dues and donations to continue to finance contractor clean-up operations. We need you to help us organize and do the many tasks that otherwise will be left undone, like fund-raising events, membership development and services, working with neighborhoods and the marina based boating communities. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Many people are becoming motivated to join the clean-up effort as they see HLCL crews working full time on the lake, and observe how much cleaner the lake remains throughout the year. Many property owners cleaned up their own shorelines, boaters and marina owners picked up and bagged debris and put it into marina dumpsters, and many people on the lake, including the enforcement officers from Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Service, actively encouraged everyone to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Several organized volunteer clean-up weekends also helped including a large volunteer turnout for the Danville Day of Caring. Thank You HLYC!

We all work from our homes, or boats, and enjoy working with one another and seeing our efforts pay off in very tangible ways.
