What is HLCL?
HLCL is an all volunteer, not-for-profit corporations created to restore the natural beauty and improve the environmental health of Herrington Lake. The organization performs this mission by directing and financing year-round clean-up operations on the lake's 2,940 acres of water surface and 325 miles of shoreline. HLCL also works with property owners, marina operators and boaters to improve public safety, discouraging littering, and to provide information to the general public on a wide range of topics important to the future of the lake and its surrounding counties.

HLCL is the only entity, public or private, dedicated solely to this mission. It is independent of commercial enterprises and government agencies and is governed, managed, and staffed exclusively by volunteer members. There are no membership eligibility requirements other than payment of annual dues. Because HLCL is a tax exempt organization, your dues, donations, and other contributions are tax-deductible. HLCL members include local property owners, businesses, boaters, and others who enjoy the lake and want to help make it clean and safe.

What HLCL does
HLCL was started by a small group of concerned residents and boat owners in 2001. Between 2001 and 2006 HLCL has raised and spent over $400,000 to gather and remove debris and dead wood from the lake, including a huge backlog that had accumulated over decades of apathy and neglect. The result of this five year intense clean up effort is a dramatic improvement in the Lake's appearance and safety, rising property values and significant growth in commercial activity and people using the lake. Unfortunately, the lake will not remain clean and safe unless we continue to remove debris and dead wood every year. In addition, as concerns about deteriorating water quality continue to increase, HLCL will participate in pollution prevention and abatement efforts that will be critical to protecting and preserving the quality of life on the lake as development and recreational use continues to expand.

How does the HLCL work
HLCL is governed by a Board of Directors which meets monthly.  The organization is managed by four HLCL Officers who oversee activities in various areas conducted by Standing Committees. We hold an annual meeting and conduct various fundraising and volunteer clean-up activities during each year.  Our direct dues paying membership is currently at 450 households and we continue to actively seek new members to help us accomplish our mission.  The vast majority of HLCL revenues are used to fund the Tudor Company clean-up on the lake year round.  We are also developing close associations with Boyle, Garrard, and Mercer county governments, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Service, Kentucky Utilities, Bluegrass PRIDE, Herrington Lake marina operators, and other local businesses that help us finance clean-up and educational activities.
